Principal Aims of the course

* To provide high quality, inspiring tuition for keen instrumental players.
* To create an environment where musicians from all backgrounds can share ideas and learn from each other.
* To foster excellence in instrumental playing of all styles, with particular emphasis on the musicianly qualities of time, touch, tone and ensemble.

What does the course provide?

A 1 day intensive course to develop knowledge and skill in all aspects of jazz and contemporary music making.
Three separate group workshops focusing on:
1. Inner Pulse - sound and time.
2. World Music Ear Training - a body integrative approach to building musicianship skills.
3. Ensemble playing and Combos.
A forum for musicians to share ideas and work together.

The right course for you?

The course is open to all keen musicians aged 17+. There is no upper age limit as our experience has shown that age difference isn't important where an enthusiasm for music is shared.

The course is not aimed at complete beginners. You will benefit most if you already have some experience playing in a group, brass band, big band, wind ensemble or orchestra.

As places on the course will be limited we recomend reserving in advance. Payment will be on the day between 14:00 - 14:20. Particiants are kindly requested to be punctual for registration/payment so that workshops can begin on time.

The Tutors

Greg Burk Piano,
Director of world music ear training workshop.

Pianist/composer/educator Greg Burk has studied and performed with some of the world's most respected jazz musicians. A former student of Yusef Lateef, Paul Bley and Danilo Perez, he has spent the last several years teaching at Boston's Berklee College of Music, working as a sideman with groups like the Either/Orchestra, and leading a variety of groups featuring jazz luminaries like Jerry Bergonzi, Gerald Cleaver, Bob Moses, and Steve Swallow.

His increasingly personal sound, forged by a penchant for both memorable melodies and probing improvisation, has been documented on a number of recent recordings, including two on Italy's legendary Soul Note label. Greg has worked with students of varying levels and backgrounds in workshops, clinics, and schools around the world. His career as an educator includes teaching privately, directing ensembles and teaching ear training as a graduate student at New England Conservatory, and teaching piano and ear training at the Berklee College of Music, where he founded the innovative cross-cultural class, World Music Ear Training.

Along with a contagious energy and more than a decade of experience as a professional jazz musician/recording artist, his approach to teaching basic skill development, jazz improvisation and rhythm emphasizes the collective discovery of his students' potential. His own simple and innovative Groove Cell Notation, for example, uses a system that helps students learn difficult rhythms with ease.

Stephen Keogh Drums
Director of inner pulse, sound and time workshop.

Dublin born Stephen Keogh followed his studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with private study in London and New York (Drummers Collective). In Ireland, he played as percussionist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, contemporary music ensembles and accompanying visiting jazz artists including Sonny Fortune, Dave Leibman, Eddie Locklaw Davis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Pat La Barbera, Louis Stewart, Pepper Adams and James Moody.

A move to London in 1988 led to tours and recordings with many British and American jazz artists including Alan Skidmore, Stan Tracey, Peter King, Charles McPherson, Art Farmer, Jason Rebello, Jean Toussaint and Benny Carter. Since moving to Barcelona in 1990, Stephen has been working in Spain, Europe and the Far East with musicians including James Williams, Johnny Griffin, Gordon Beck, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Harrold Land and Kirk Lightsey.

During the last years work has included touring with the Peter King Quartet, Gordon Beck Trio, Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner, Herb Ellis, Gilad Atzmon, Ubizo with Amampondo, Benny Golson and Steve Grossman . Stephen plays with the European Jazz Piano Trio led by Bill Charlap, Urban Jazz Quintet, Urban Jazz Ensemble, Peter King Quartet.

Workshops/Clinics: Artistic director of Seminario de Jazz de Vilreal 2001 in Spain, artistic director of the Seminario de Jazz y Otros Musicas de Benicasim 2003, artistic progammer/consultant of the Avui Jazz Concert Series, Spain, drum/percussion tutor at the Louis Stewart Jazz School West Clare in Ireland 1999 - 2003, principal tutor at the Percussion Summer School Leeds University 2004.

Kevin Dean Trumpet
Director of ensemble playing and combos workshop.

Kevin Dean was born in 1954 on a North Iowa farm near Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa University with an MA in music in 1976. He later received his Masters degree from Miami University in Miami Florida in 1980 in jazz performance and pedagogy. In 1980 he was on the newly formed faculty at St. Francis of Xavier in Nova Scotia to develop a jazz program for the maritime provinces. In 1984 he accepted the position of director of Jazz Studies at McGill University, in Montreal, the position he currently holds.

He is an avid composer, trumpet player and leader of small groups. He has performed in concert with such prominent names as Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, and Joe Henderson. His current passion is the Hammond B3 organ and recently made his debut on the instrument as soloist with the Montreal Big Band. The saxophone star of the Irish jazz scene, horn player and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six. Michael first came to prominence in 1984 when, aged thirteen, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by Pat LaBarbera, Enrico Pieranunzi and Milt Hinton. Michael has toured the world four times with The Mingus Big Band, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Florian Ross,soloist with the BBC big band, Louis Stewart and Gerard Presencer among others.

At Dublin Jazz Week 2000 he performed the jazz suite, Octagon, by German composer Florian Ross which was specially commissioned for The Michael Buckley Quartet with Strings As well as frequent radio spots, he has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores and has collaborated on recordings with Donovan,the Cranberrys,Jerry Lee Louis.

Michael Coady Bass
Co-Director of Ensemble and combos workshop.

Born in Waterford, Ireland. After some time working with local rock and Irish traditional groups he moved to Dublin. In 1996 Michael began working regularly with guitarist Louis Stewart, and many visiting artists such as Ronnie Cuber, Scott Hamilton, Mark Murphy and others.

Michael continued his studies, attending Banff Center for the Arts Jazz Summer Program, Alberta, Canada in 1997, completed the L.G.S.M. diploma course at Newpark Music Center, Dublin, 1998. Attended Berklee School of Music, U.S.A. and at the Karnatic School of Percussion, Bangalore, India under T.A.S. Mani.

Michael is now based in London and plays with leading musicians on the UK and International Jazz scene.
