Overview

Global Music Foundation is launching its Rhythms of the World series this week in Certaldo. This will be the beginning of a succession of seminars in which there will be the opportunity to experience and learn about rhythmic traditions from all over the world. For the first in this series we take a look at Brazil and the Samba

This will run alongside the Tuscany Jazz Vocal Summer School in which there will be 35-40 singers from around Europe. As the percussionists train and learn the various different calls and rhythms, under the guidance of Felix Gibbons, the singers will learn some of the traditional songs as performed at the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. On the last day of the course there will be an open air public performance during which we will bring the joy and the spirit of carnival to Certaldo. Every night at the jam sessions there will be opportunities to play Samba Cançao in a small group setting.

Principal aims of the course:
• To offer high quality, inspiring tuition for instrumentalists and vocalists from all backgrounds
• To provide a creative environment where musicians can share ideas and learn from each other
• To develop overall musicianship - with particular emphasis on time, touch, tone and ensemble playing
• To deepen ones understanding of Latin music and Jazz

Workshops and one to one classes on the following percussion instruments:
Surdo, Repique, Repenique, Caixa de guerra, Tamborim, Chocalao, Rocca, Chapinhas, Tarol, Reco Reco, Cuíca, Agogo, Pandeiro, Ganza

Learn all about Samba, Bossa Nova, Partido Alto samba, Samba-Cançao or Samba-Pagode, Choro, Choro Nova, Jazz Bossa and more.

Tutors

Felix Gibbons
Felix Gibbons has been playing percussion in the music industry for over 20 years now, doing everything from samba and salsa to bhangra and pop with everyone from Brazilian Grammy winner Milton Nascimento to Peter Gabriel. He records for BMG/Sony and teaches internationally.

Felix was top in the UESP judges exam and has many times judged the rhythm and melody categories in the Carnivals in Sao Paulo. In Brazil, Carnival is the country’s greatest festival but it’s also a serious competition. Playing in the "baterias" (drum section) he's been champion there twice with the School of Samba Rosas de Ouro and played many times in other schools.

Whilst flying around Brazil playing at all kinds of events like International Festivals in Garanhuns, Pernambuco and Londrina, Parana, he has done a lot of ethno-musicological research and looked into many of the different carnival art forms in seven different states. He’s also done post-graduate studies in this field at both the Universities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro .

Guillermo Rozenthuler
Guillermo Rozenthuler is an accomplished singer, guitarist and composer from Argentina who has relocated to London after more than a decade performing the length and breadth of South America. He is a member of the award winning band "Orient House Ensemble". This year at WOMAD he will be presenting material from his latest release, ‘The Blue Hour’. Guillermo is one of the most in-demand voice coaches and activists on the London Latin scene.

What is Samba?

Brazil boasts one of the world's greatest music cultures and one of its most popular genres is Samba. In the late 19th Century - after the abolition of slavery - large numbers of former slaves of West African origin moved to the hills around Rio de Janeiro. In African Orixa religious traditions song and dance are an integral part of worship. The music and dance from these ceremonies blended with other influences and emerged in the early 20th century as Samba.

Over the passage of time the Samba has been influenced by European music and jazz. There are several variations to samba including the exciting and loud Samba de Enredo - as in the Rio Carnival with a large percussion section (bateria). Verses are chanted by a huge troop of parading samba school members all dressed in fantastic costumes. Then there is the slower and more intimate samba cançao, usually with one singer and a small group. There will be plenty of opportunities to sample and experiment with both during the week.

Samba is the expression of hope, freedom and joy at being alive.

Special Activities

Every GMF workshop features outstanding musicians who are also great communicators. Under their guidance, participants gain valuable insights and playing experience, rehearsing together towards a concert. There are classes in the various musical disciplines such as instrumental technique, harmony, ensemble playing and improvisation, and, as well as teaching individually and in groups, the tutors give performances themselves.

In addition, a unique sequence of activities is offered at a GMF workshop, which together stimulate self-awareness and creativity.

Alexander Technique - by Val Keogh

Many performing artists find the Technique an invaluable way of fine-tuning their posture and movement. These introductory classes concentrate on the relationship of the head and neck to the rest of the body. The physical and mental exercises help promote a sense of rediscovery and ease in day-to-day activities, and especially in music-making.

Pulse Training - by Stephen Keogh

Pulse lies at the heart of music, and developing one’s own inner pulse is the goal of these sessions. The work fosters awareness – of the pulse, of silence, of the other members of the group. This workshop is hugely beneficial to musicians of every kind.

There will be session each morning of Alexander Technique. These sessions are included in the price of the course.

Val will also be available to teach private classes to anyone who wishes during the week. There will be a charge of 30 Euros per private lesson. Private lessons should be arranged with Val and the fee is payable directly to him.

There will be several Pulse Training sessions during the week. Times to be arranged.
