Global Music Foundation International Festival of Music and the Arts
Dunmore East, Ireland 17 - 23 June 2010

<< Back to Events

Important Notice

Due to the volcanic ash cloud, its ongoing eruption, the complete unpredictability of the situation and the continuing uncertainties surrounding international air travel, it is with great regret that we see no alternative other than to suspend the Global Music Foundation International Festival of Music and the Arts Dunmore East, Ireland 17 - 23 June 2010. These unprecedented events have created a situation where it's impossible to be able to guarantee a quality experience for students as we cannot know whether the team of tutors and performers will be able to get to Ireland. We are offering all students that have signed up to the course a full refund, or a chance to rebook on a future GMF course.

The spectacular setting, the team of outstanding performers and teachers and the varied schedule of activity all add up to an unforgettable experience for everyone who takes part.

  • Courses: Music (instrumental and vocal), Poetry, Dance, Martial Arts
  • An exceptional roster of artists/teachers from around the world.
  • A rich programme of concerts by world class performers including music, dance and exhibitions.
  • Intensive study, equivalent to a whole term at a music conservatory - some 6 hours tuition per day, including supervised rehearsals, instrumental classes and one-to-one lessons.
  • A wealth of opportunities to sing and play: two student concerts, nightly jam sessions and other spontaneous events.
  • Free admission for course students, to all events and concerts given by members of the faculty and guest artists.
  • A stimulating programme of activities to develop skills and awareness: Pulse Training, Concentration Techniques, Conducting, Vocal and Body, Movement, Jazz Choir, Samba and Martial Arts.
  • A wonderful, atmospheric small-town setting with friendly, convivial people.

The Summer School is open to vocalists, instrumentalists, martial artists and visual artists and both students and professionals are welcome to attend. It offers first class coaching by a team of leading international artists renowned for their teaching skills.

Every GMF workshop features outstanding musicians who are also great communicators. Under their guidance, participants gain valuable insights and playing experience, rehearsing together towards a concert. There are classes in the various musical disciplines such as instrumental technique, harmony, ensemble playing and improvisation, and, as well as teaching individually and in groups, the tutors give performances themselves.

All students on all courses will have an opportunity to attend morning classes from the other courses - ie if you are a dance student you will be able to do the morning workshops on pulse, choir, martial arts samba etc.

From midday students will work with their tutors on their chosen course.

This provides opportunities for everyone to sample a variety of disciplines and experience directly the inter-connectedness of all the arts.

The Programme

The Vocal and Instrumental Course

Instrumentalists and vocalists will cover a wide variety of styles including Jazz, Blues, Celtic, Folk, Choir and Latin music. The course provides a unique opportunity to learn, explore and gain insight into working in several different genres: Jazz, Latin, Celtic Folk and World music.

The Dance Course

Dancers will focus on Salsa and dance from Celtic countries. Alyth McCormack was brought up on the Island of Lewis within the Gaelic culture which is known for its wealth of song, music and prose and Alyth grew up singing these songs. There are various types: working songs such as waulking, rowing and spinning; love songs; laments and, particular to Scottish Gaelic, the puirt a beul or 'mouth music'. These are dancing songs written specifically for their rhythm and were used for dancing to when there were no musicians about.

The Martial Arts Course

Martial Artists have a rare opportunity to train with Master Bob Breen and train in Kali, Escrima, Arnis, Jeet Kune Do and more.

The Poetry Course

Workshops led by Anne-Marie Fyfe will allow writers and would-be writers to explore their own experiences of, and imaginative responses to, a chosen theme, through a range of resources and techniques, through examples from literature and the wider culture, through visual imagery and through led exercises, resulting in finished work in each session, and in constructive mutual criticism.

The Poetry course will run from June 17-20 inclusive. Fee for the Poetry Course is 200 Euros.
Applicants also have the option to stay on as a listener for the rest of the seminar (total fee = 300 Euros).
There is also the option to join either the music, vocal or martial arts course from June 21-23 inclusive (total fee = 355 Euros - 345 euros if booked before 15 April 2010).

Morning Workshops

At the beginning of each day, students on all the courses come together to participate in a unique sequence of activities which collectively stimulate self-awareness and enhance creativity.

Pulse Training - Stephen Keogh

Pulse lies at the heart of music, and developing one's own inner pulse is the goal of these sessions. The work fosters awareness - of the pulse, of silence, of the other members of the group. This workshop is hugely beneficial to musicians of every kind.

Vocal and Body - Guillermo Rozenthuler

The workshop explores the use of energy and the voice, and fine tuning body and mind coordination within a musical context. Using song material from all around the world we work at enhancing the quality of our listening skills and the sounds we produce.

Samba - Felix Gibbons, Percussion and Guillermo Rozenthuler, Voice

A group workshop in which we train and learn the various different calls and rhythms, under the guidance of Felix Gibbons and Guillermo Rozenthuler. The singers will learn some of the traditional songs as performed at the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. On the last day of the course there will be an open air public performance during which we will bring the joy and the spirit of carnival to Dunmore East. Every night at the jam sessions there will be opportunities to play Samba Cançao in a small group setting.

Martial Arts - Bob Breen

Bob Breen is regarded as the father of JKD and the Filipino martial arts in Europe. He is probably one of the most unique individuals in the martial arts world, and is renowned for his teaching abilities and his knowledge.

Poetry - Cahal Dallat and Anne-Marie Fyfe

Jazz and poetry have a natural affiliation as both explore abstraction, expression and improvisation.

More about the concerts and events

Showstopper!, The Improvised Musical

'An ingenious and engaging mix of improvisation and musical theatre. If you admired the Comedy Store Players for their ability to think on their feet, this bunch do it with the same verve and flair, but set to music. I was left open-mouthed. The act's success lies in the invention and skill of a cast who seem to be able to turn their brains and voices to any subject and musical style. I can honestly say that I'd opt for this show's wild, inventive energy over The Sound of Music any day.'
Lyn Gardner - The Guardian

WINNER - Mervyn Stutter's Spirit Of The Fringe Award 2009
NOMINEE - Best Production - MTM Awards 2009
NOMINEE - Judges - Discretionary Award - MTM Awards 2009

'A joyous, uproarious collaboration propelled by the quickwittedness of the multi-talented cast.... The Sticking Place's musical high-wire act is HARD TO BEAT.'
Independent on Sunday - Five out of five

'An awesomely talented cast. Don't miss seeing Showstopper! You really mustn't.'
Kate Copstick - The Scotsman

Payment

To secure a place on the seminar send deposit of 100 euros using one of the following methods:

1. Send bank transfer. We will send you the details when you are ready to make the transfer.

Note on Bank Transfers:
Sometimes people mistakenly (or intentionally) pass on all the bank charges to us when making the transfer. This means that we lose part of the fee. As we are a non profit organisation, and run these courses as cheaply as possible for the benefit of the students, it makes life difficult for us.

2. Cheque or bank draft made payable to Global Music Foundation. Please enclose a note stating which course you are reserving for. Post to

144 Main Street
Shadwell
Leeds
LS17 8JB

UK residents please make your cheque out for the sterling equivalent. This helps us as the banks charges are very high.

3. send money by PAYPAL

Paying via Paypal:
The commission that Paypal charges us for each payment has risen to 3.4%. This represents a substantial chunk of the fee and, as explained above, we are a non profit company. Rather than hide this commission in the course fee we have added a 1.5% transaction charge to all Paypal payments received.

* Deposit is non-refundable

Remainder of fee for chosen option must be paid before 14 May 2010. You may also pay the full amount now using either of the two methods mentioned above.

Join us for a great musical adventure.

PLEASE NOTE: The event takes place in a beautiful setting and we have a lot of fun and make new friends, but it is nevertheless hard work so don't expect a holiday! The Right Course For You?

The course is open to all keen musicians aged 17+. There is no upper age limit.

The course is not aimed at complete beginners. You will benefit most if you already have some experience playing with other musicians - the type of group or ensemble doesn't matter.

Location/Getting There

About Dunmore East

Ireland's most picturesque fishing and holiday village in the south-east, 16 kilometres from Waterford City on the A684 and only 75 minutes driving from the Gateway Ferryport at Rosslare. Dunmore East is a village rich in history and an area of beauty and tranquillity.

"Nearby at the entrance of (Waterford) Harbour is the village of Dunmore, formally a place of resort for fishermen, but now a delightful and fashionable watering place. The village is situated in a valley, with a gentle slope towards the sea; the houses are built irregularly, without regard to site or uniformity of appearance, except that they all look at the same point - the Hook Lighthouse, on the opposite coast. Most of the cottages are built of clay and are thatched with straw, and generally let during the summer season from one to three guineas a week. On the hill, which forms the background of the picture, are the ruins of a church."

Nearly two hundred years later the thatched cottages are still there, though the rents have increased somewhat! The ruined church refers to the old church of Killea (Cill Aodha - Aodh's Church) thought to have been built in the twelfth century, one wall of which still stands, opposite the Catholic church of The Holy Cross, at the top of Killea hill.

In 1814, however, dramatic changes took place when Alexander Nimmo, the Scottish engineer (builder of Limerick's Sarsfield Bridge) commenced work on the new Harbour at Dunmore to accommodate the packet station for ships, which carried the Royal Mail between England and Ireland. The work consisted mainly of a massive pier or quay with an elegant lighthouse at the end.
